A daily news report is an article in a newspaper that tells about current events or news. It can also contain analyses and prognoses about the development of a certain field of human activity. News reports can be of a variety of types: politics, celebrity news, crime stories and sports, as well as popular opinions.
Some reporters have a specific area that they cover, or “beat” in the words of newspaper lingo. Others, known as general assignment reporters, are on call to cover any story that may come up. A seasoned reporter can easily switch between these two types of work depending on the needs of the paper.
The most important news stories are given priority in a newspaper and may be featured on Page One. This includes wars, government, politicians and the economy. Other important topics include crimes (road traffic offences, murder or robbery), accidents and disasters. Some newspapers feature opinion pieces by writers, usually celebrities and experts in specialist fields. These articles may focus on a particular political or social issue and use emotive language to draw the reader’s attention.
After a reporter has written a story it is sent to another part of the news division called the copy desk. Here the editor will check for spelling errors and look for any gaps in the story that could confuse or leave questions unanswered. If necessary they will consult reference materials including past newspaper issues. Clear communication is key to keeping your team productive and focused.
