One of the most devastating tsunamis occurred on December 26, 2004, known as the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Waves as high as 30 meters hit various countries, including Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Some 230,000 people lost their lives, and millions more were left homeless, changing thousands of families forever. The main cause of tsunamis is seismic activity. When tectonic plates move, energy is released and creates huge waves. These waves can spread thousands of kilometers, and as they approach the coast, their height increases drastically. This system can detect underwater earthquakes and predict potential tsunamis, providing valuable time for the evacuation of residents. Community training is also an important part of disaster mitigation, where residents are involved in evacuation simulations. The importance of research into tsunami patterns and impacts cannot be overstated. Geologists and marine scientists continue to conduct studies to better understand wave behavior. Sophisticated computer models are now being used to predict the areas most at risk and design more effective mitigation strategies. This research is needed to increase international cooperation in helping countries vulnerable to disasters. Humanitarian stories are also an important part of the tsunami narrative. Many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and individuals showed solidarity by donating their time and resources to help victims. The UN office even launched a long-term recovery program that supports infrastructure development and education in affected areas. Tsunami shows that natural forces are unpredictable and very destructive. Awareness of the tsunami threat must always be increased. Strengthening infrastructure, early warning systems and global cooperation are critical to reducing the risk of future disasters. Knowledge of the early symptoms of a tsunami, such as the roar of the receding sea, is very important for community safety. Awareness and education are the keys to protecting life amidst the threat of natural disasters such as tsunamis.
